Gallica, the BnF digital library, has a new design: new layout, improvements of some research and access functionalities, and new curations of its digital collections, all for the benefit of a large audience.
An exceptional documentary resource
Gallica is one of the most important digital libraries freely accessible online.
It provides free access to hundreds of thousands of books, newspapers, and magazines. Tens of thousands of manuscripts, maps and plans, prints, posters, photographs, scores and sound
recordings are also available. In total, more than three million digital items.
Gallica covers all fields of knowledge: history, literature, sciences, philosophy, art history, law, economy and politics… Its collections offer one of the most important documentary resources
available on line.
A collective digital library
The major part of documents available via Gallica come from the BnF’s royalty-free heritage collections; however, the number of documents coming from its numerous partner institutions – several hundred libraries and publishers – is growing more and more every day.
A mobile application for Gallica
Gallica is also mobile! The Gallica application for tablets and smartphones can be downloaded for free on the App Store and Google Play. It provides access to the whole collection of documents digitised by the BnF; it also allows consulting, sharing and downloading documents.
A new version
New functionalities have been added to the interface a couple of months ago:
- a new viewer for the documents and new modes of display,
- an enhanced «research mode» for newspapers and periodicals,
- browsing by type of documents, themes and geographical areas,
- new types of documents (videos, 3D objects…),
- an improved reading for tablets.
