Manual correction of OCR is expensive and time-consuming. That’s why IBM has developed the CONCERT tool in IMPACT, a crowdsourcing tool with which users can correct OCR results in a very efficient way. The focus is on productivity – the Adaptive OCR engine is trained on the basis of the corrections, which lowers the number of errors.
There are three types of sessions in CONCERT: corrections of characters (through so-called ‘ carpets’ ), words and pages. For the carpets, the user will see a screen of letters that have been recognised as the same letter by the OCR engine. By only identifying the wrong letters the user can correct a large number of letters at once. After the character session users can also do corrections on word or page level.

After a live demonstration of the tool by Lotte Wilms, journalist Ewoud Sanders (NRC) gives his feedback as a user. He thinks the CONCERT tool is a great tool, both fun and addictive, and has some useful tips to improve the interface.
Handmatige correctie van OCR is vaak duur en tijdrovend. Daarom is door IBM in IMPACT de CONCERT tool ontwikkeld, waarmee gebruikers via crowdsourcing zeer efficient OCR resultaten kunnen corrigeren. De nadruk ligt op productiviteit – de Adaptive OCR engine wordt getraind op basis van de correcties waardoor het aantal fouten verder daalt.
Er zijn drie soorten sessies in CONCERT: correctie van karakters (via zogeheten ‘carpets’), woorden en pagina’s. In de carpets worden schermen vol letters gepresenteerd die herkend zijn door de OCR machine als dezelfde letter. De gebruiker kan vervolgens de foute letters ertussenuit halen en zo een groot aantal letters tegelijk controleren. Het is daarna mogelijk om correcties te doen op basis van hele woorden of zelfs op basis van de hele pagina.
