DPI is an artefact of spatial printing whereby what appears to the viewer as a continuous image is in fact made up of many tiny ink-dots close together. The number of dots per inch tends to correlate with the resolution of a digital image (with high DPI implying high resolution), but because DPI is a characteristic of printing rather than capture, the relation is only indirect.
